Kobe was first released as a single-weight in 2018 by Jérémy Schneider at vj-type. In 2020, we worked together on its re-development, firstly by giving the font a subtle makeover in order to make it optically fit for text purposes. Additionally, we created five new styles (black, black oblique, bold, bold oblique, regular oblique). Kobe’s straight-forward, well proportioned modular structure makes it as usable in text as its playful terminals and many alternates make it fit for display version. The numerous ligatures and stylistic sets take inspiration from Japanese writing shapes. The daring slant of the oblique is a testimony to the studio’s quirky approach at designing fonts.
